About Staines and Its Housing Market
Officially called Staines-upon-Thames since 2012, Staines is a small town in Surrey about 17 miles southwest of London City Centre. The local authorities decided for a name change to emphasise its location next to the River Thames and make it more attractive to businesses. But according to many, the main purpose of the name change was to get rid of the negative perceptions created by the Ali G Show. However, the town continues to be referred to under its former name.
History of Staines dates back to the Roman times. The Romans set up a settlement here in 43 C.E., the same year they started the conquest of Britain. The Romans also built the first known Staines Bridge (the current one dates from the 1830s). The Roman called their settlement “ad Pontes” which translates as “at the bridges”. Staines is first mentioned under its current name (although spelt “Stanes”) in the Domesday Book in the late 11th century.
Despite the name change, the negative association tends to persist although a growing number of commuters, first-time home buyers and investors are discovering the town’s heavily underrated advantages. The town is home to a number of companies due to its convenient distance to Heathrow and London, plenty of employment opportunities, good transport connections to the UK capital and a unique mix of urban and country living. Lastly, it has an attractive housing market with the properties having very affordable prices. Last year, the average prices ranged from about £230,000 (terraced properties) to £300,000 (semi-detached properties).
