About Camberley and Its Housing Market
Camberley is a mid-sized town in Surrey. It is located near the county borders with Berkshire and Hampshire about 31 miles southwest of London City Centre. Like most other towns at this distance to London, Camberley too owes its current status and future prospects to the railway providing a link to the UK capital. The town began to develop and attract both new residents and businesses only after the arrival of the railway. But it above all owes its existence to The Royal Military College (the later Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst).
A small settlement called the “New Town” and then “Yorktown” formed around the College in the early 19th century. Prior to the construction of the Military College, the area was unsettled largely due to sandy soil that made farming virtually impossible. The settlement continued to grow over the following years, especially after the establishment of the Staff College in the 1870s. At this time, it came to be called Cambridge Town (after the Cambridge Hotel) but in 1877, it finally got its current name.
Camberley continued to expand and develop in the 20th and 21st centuries, growing into a thriving town with plenty of jobs for the local population, endless entertainment for all ages and highly diverse housing market in terms of both properties themselves and prices. Speaking about prices, last year the average price for a semi-detached property was £300,000, while detached properties were in average selling for £600,000.
